Overview
In the far western reaches of Nepals Himalayas close to the Tibetan plateau and Dhaulagiri region you will find the spectacular Upper Dolpo.
The entire district was closed to trekkers up until 1989, which is why the region is one of the worlds most ancient and well conserved, making it suitable for trekkers who want to avoid the well-trod trekking routes. The remoteness and exclusiveness from the modern world has made the culture and tradition of this region unharmed and untouched.
Step back in time to see people living as they did hundreds of years ago.
Quite simply, this region is remote, rugged, raw, unexplored and naturally beautiful.
This epic journey traces the ancient footsteps of salt traders, where you will witness the breathtaking Shey Phoksundo Lake, a turquoise gem and Nepal’s deepest lake!
You will visit ancient monasteries, witness turquoise lakes, breathtaking mountains and panoramic views of Annapurna and Dhaulagiri, roaring waterfalls, green meadows and most importantly 3 mountain passes above 5000m.
The region is also renowned for its rich and diverse flora, including Rhododendron forests and alpine meadows.
A variety of diverse wildlife can also be spotted such as Mountain goats, snow leopard, deer, blue sheep, Himalayan Langur…. Just to name a few.
Trekkers will observe Tibetan Buddhist culture and explore the largest park in Nepal (Shey Phoksundo National Park)
Shey Gompa is a highlight of the Dolpo journey where centuries old Buddhist and Bonpo traditions are still practiced alongside shamanistic influences.
Upper Dolpo trek is a once in a lifetime trip, a very unique adventure with rich cultural experiences. It will be life changing.
A trek that undoubtedly offers it all, the best of both worlds!
