Overview
The climb of both Ama Dablam and Island Peak is a serious yet very rewarding climb. It provides technical climbing with some exciting challenges which require:
- extensive knowledge on the use of ropes and technical equipment
- excellent physical and mental condition (able to walk 6-8 hours per day)
- previous climbing experience is required
Our Expedition will begin in Lukla, after a short flight from Kathmandu.
This itinerary allows for us to have proper preparation and acclimatisation, for a safe and successful summit climb. Before climbing Ama Dablam you will visit Gokyo Ri (5320m) via Chola Pass (5420m) Everest Base Camp (5364m) Kalapathar (5550m) and Island Peak Summit (6189m).
Our ascent to Ama Dablam will be made via the SW ridge route, the climbing on this route requires a technical climb and involves pure rock climbing on granite/exposed ridges and mixed snow rock climbing.
This is our special program for Ama Dablam preparation, and it makes for the ultimate trekking adventure trip and climb, having the opportunity to incorporate so many other magnificent views/cultural experiences and no doubt, bucket list places on your list!
The views you will encounter will be breathtaking… literally! And a huge memorable life experience and sense of achievement.
Island Peak (in Nepali “Ima Tse Peak”) is a summit of the Everest massif.
It is located near the Lhotse Shar. Island Peak was first mounted in 1953 by a British team of climbers; it was a preparatory tour for an expedition to the summit of the Mount Everest. Even today, it still serves as a preliminary stage to the Everest ascent.
With breathtaking views from the summit, this effort is more than rewarded: You have a clear view of the Nuptse (7,879 m), the Lhotse (8,501 m), the Lhotse Milddle Peak (8,410 m) and the Lhotse Shar (8,383 m) in the North, the Makalu (8,475 m) and the Baruntse (7,129 m) in the East and the Peak of Amadablam (6,812 m) in the South (famous for expeditions).
For its soaring ridges Ama Dablam meaning “mothers necklace” in the local sherpa language distinguishes itself with its unique pyramid shape, and is sometimes referred as the “Matterhorn of the Himalayas.”
Ama Dablam is an exquisite mountain that is also located almost due south of Mt Everest and Mt Lhotse in the Khumbu region. It is one of the most stunning mountains in the world!
The mountain rises high above the Dudh Koshi river valley and captures every trekkers attention when trekking along the main trail towards Everest Base Camp. The mountain is featured on the one-rupee Nepalese banknote.
Ama Dablam was first climbed on 13 March 1961 by Mike Gill (NZ), Barry Bishop (US), Mike Ward (UK) and Wally Romanes (NZ) via the Southwest Ridge.
